Heritage

In addition to their sites of outstanding beauty, the Hautes-Pyrénées have a rich and varied heritage: castles, museums, churches, abbeys, studs, caves…

Abbayes : The Hautes-Pyrénées offer more than 10 abbeys, all dating from the tenth century. The main ones are the Abbey of Escaladieu and the Abbey of Saint Savin.

Castles and Fortified Villages: make the most of your holiday to visit the innumerable castles and fortified villages (12 of them) in our département. Among so many others: Mauvezin castle, Lourdes castle, Montaner castle and the fortified villages of Galan, Rabastens de Bigorre, Tournay and Trie sur Baïse.

National Stud : A protected site, an historic monument, listed in the inventory of national heritage, it is known throughout the world and is home to national stallions of various breeds, some of which are local.
Highlight: EQUESTRIA, European Festival of Equestrian Creation (July).

Cuisine Duck confit, foie gras, garbure… our local produce, our specialities promise your taste buds a flavour explosion.


The White Bean from Tarbes : essential in a garbure, a lamb stew or even a cassoulet, it can be found dried at all markets.


Two locally produced wines : Madiran (red wine) and Pacherenc (white wine).
